Workshops

Dear Painters:

I’m already looking forward to this year’s workshop. In 2010 I’ll again offer a two-week class out of my Rockport, Maine studio. The time commitment is substantial for all of us, but it allows us to make real progress.

The first week we, as a group, will be out in the field painting all day. It will not be strenuous, but you will need to have compact equipment that you are able to carry short distances. During this first week we will paint a wide variety of subjects at a number of different locations. We will concentrate on moving beyond rendering just what is in front of you and explore ways to address the all important and often overlooked question “what do you want your painting to say.” Strong composition and design, proper values, drawing, color harmony, balance and key will be stressed.

The second week will be quite different in that it will be run as a tutorial study. Each student will paint independently and then we’ll meet as a group mid-day in my studio for an intensive critique.

Please don’t expect to depart my workshop with a batch of finished paintings! Instead, my hope is that by the end of the two weeks you’ll be thinking more about what you are painting and painting with truer conviction.
